Inaugural BIS Short Track Camp attracts over 50 speed skaters

A British Ice Skating Short Track Speed Skating camp was attended by over 50 skaters from across the UK. Hosted at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham it was an opportunity for all those wanting to lace up their racing skates to get coaching from some of the country’s leading skaters and coaches.
Everyone who attended had two on ice training sessions, an off-ice exercise class before an afternoon of racing.
The level of skater ranged from those who had never been to a full session before to skaters trying to gain official qualifying times for National and International competitions.
The day was led by coaches from the Speed Skating Performance Programme (SSPP), as well as a range of dedicated volunteers.
Members of the SSPP performance squad Holly Hoyland, Branden Marshall, Peter Riches, Solomon Prempeh and Matt Gardner were also present, passing on their knowledge to aspiring skaters. They also took part in a Q&A which offered everyone a fascinating insight as to what it’s like to be a performance skater. They were quizzed on everything from how to pick the correct skates to how to deal with the adrenaline of racing.
All times recorded on the day will stand as official race results and have been passed to club officials.
A huge thank you must go to all volunteers, without them the day would not have been able to go ahead. Also, to any parents or guardians parents who brought along skaters and stayed to support.
