Eighth in the World – Kersten caps incredible season at World Cup Final

Cornelius Kersten recorded the best ever result for a British Long Track Speed Skater by finishing the ISU World Cup 1000m in 8th place overall.

Racing in the World Cup Final on Saturday he finished the 1000m in 1:08.974, 0.92 off the winning time set by Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands.

In a packed Thialf Arena he skated in the fourth pair against Japan’s Masaya Yamada. His result of 8th on the day meant he won 68 World Cup points that took him to a total of 187 and 8th in the overall standings.

The result caps a season in which he became the first British male speed skater to represent Team GB in 30 years at a Winter Olympics, finishing 9th with the best result for GB since 1976. He finished the European Championships in 4th to register the best result for a Brit in the 130-year history of the competition and broke British records in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m.
